What It Really Means to Be a Practice Nurse in Today’s NHS
When people hear “practice nurse,” they often picture someone giving injections, taking blood pressures, or changing dressings. While these tasks are certainly part of what I do, they represent only a small fraction, if any, of my daily work. The reality is that the role of a practice nurse has evolved dramatically, yet many people, including some healthcare professionals, don’t fully understand what we actually do in today’s NHS.
The Heart of Modern Practice Nursing
The bulk of my day isn’t spent with needles or blood pressure cuffs. Instead, I spend my time in consultations, having meaningful conversations with patients about their health. I’m educating people about their conditions, discussing treatment options, managing symptoms, and making clinical decisions about ongoing care. I work alongside GPs as an autonomous practitioner, covering the full spectrum of chronic conditions—from hypertension and cardiac health to asthma, COPD, stroke, epilepsy, and contraception.
This is clinical practice at its core: listening, assessing, educating, and empowering patients to take control of their health.
My Areas of Expertise
While I manage all chronic conditions, I’ve developed particular expertise in several key areas:
🩸 Diabetes Management — I have a particular interest in the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, which are transforming the way we manage type 2 diabetes and obesity. These medications not only help reduce blood glucose levels but also support weight loss, cardiovascular protection, and improved metabolic outcomes. I stay fully updated with current guidance and emerging research, and I help patients understand how to safely and effectively use these tools alongside lifestyle changes.
Whether it’s managing side effects, adjusting doses, or addressing expectations—I ensure people feel supported, not judged.
⚖️ Obesity and Weight Management — Obesity is complex, and the way we talk about it in healthcare needs to change. This is not about blame—it’s about biology, environment, hormones, psychology, and support. I work with patients to understand the why behind their weight journey and offer evidence-based support, including medication when appropriate, behavioural change, and lifestyle strategy.
I don’t give one-size-fits-all advice. I listen. I personalise. I work with real-life, not textbook theory.
Women’s Health — With special focus on menopause, PCOS, and PMDD. These conditions are often misunderstood or dismissed, but they profoundly impact women’s lives. I provide the time and expertise needed to properly address these complex hormonal health issues.
Lifestyle Medicine — Understanding how we can better control chronic conditions through lifestyle interventions. This isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about sustainable changes that address root causes and improve long-term outcomes.
The Personal Connection
My interest in mindset, burnout, and chronic fatigue isn’t just professional—it’s deeply personal. Having experienced these challenges myself, I understand the frustration of feeling unheard or dismissed by healthcare providers. This lived experience informs how I practice, ensuring that every patient feels seen, heard, and understood.
In my personal time, I’ve explored yoga, yin yoga, breathwork, Pilates, children’s yoga, meditation, gene keys, and journaling. These aren’t just hobbies—they’re tools I integrate into my practice to help patients find holistic approaches to wellness.
The Research and Problem-Solving Mindset
A significant part of my role involves continuous learning and research. Healthcare is constantly evolving, and I’m committed to staying at the forefront of evidence-based practice. When I encounter a complex case or a question I can’t immediately answer, I dive deep into the research. I’m honest about what I don’t know, and I work hard to find solutions.
This is what patients deserve: a healthcare provider who doesn’t just follow protocols but thinks critically, researches thoroughly, and advocates persistently for their wellbeing.
The Value I Bring
I sometimes struggle with imposter syndrome—wondering if I’m sharing my skills effectively or if people truly understand the value I bring. But I’ve learned something important: I am enough. My patients seek me out not because I have all the answers, but because I ensure they feel heard, seen, and understood. I create a safe space where they can discuss their concerns without judgment, and I work tirelessly to find solutions that work for their unique circumstances.
Redefining Practice Nursing
The modern practice nurse is a clinician, educator, researcher, and advocate. We’re not just task-oriented technicians; we’re autonomous healthcare professionals who provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. We spend our days having the conversations that matter, addressing the conditions that impact quality of life, and empowering patients to take control of their health.
Yes, I can give injections and take blood pressures. But more importantly, I can help you understand your diabetes, navigate menopause, manage your chronic fatigue, or find lifestyle approaches that actually work for your individual situation. I can provide the time, expertise, and compassionate care that our healthcare system desperately needs.
That’s what it means to be a practice nurse in today’s NHS and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
