Mindset: The Seventh Anchor That Holds It All Together

When you look at the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine’s (BSLM) six core pillars—nutrition, movement, community, stress management, toxin removal, and sleep—they provide a strong foundation for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. However, I’ve added a seventh anchor: mindset.

Mindset encompasses personal growth, habit formation, and being in the right mental space to create lasting change. It’s the foundation that supports all the other anchors. Without the right mindset, it’s nearly impossible to implement or sustain meaningful lifestyle changes.

When I tell someone they have high blood pressure or diabetes and need to make lifestyle changes, the difference in outcomes often comes down to mindset. Those who believe they can make a change, who are open to growth, and who prioritise themselves are far more likely to succeed.

On the other hand, patients who resist—offering excuses like “I don’t have time to cook” or “I can’t exercise because I have pain”—often struggle. Without addressing their mindset, they end up relying more heavily on medication because the root causes of their condition remain unaddressed.

Building a positive mindset doesn’t require an overhaul of your life. It starts with small, manageable steps. Start by dedicating 15–30 minutes a day to self-care. That time could be spent walking, preparing a healthy meal, or simply resting. Once those habits are in place, it’s easier to build on them.

I often encourage my patients to explore personal development, whether through books, podcasts, or free online resources. You don’t need to spend a fortune—just invest your time. The key is believing that this investment will be worth it.

I’ve faced my own struggles with mental health, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain. In the past four months, I’ve made a concerted effort to prioritise my personal growth. By being intentional about what I read, listen to, and surround myself with, I’ve been able to build habits that truly support my health:

  • Drinking my daily green gut glow.
  • Exercising consistently.
  • Sticking to sleep routines, even when staying up late feels tempting.

It hasn’t always been easy, but I know that these choices set me up for success. Filling my own cup first allows me to show up better for others.

Mindset is the first thing we address when you work with me. Before we dive into nutrition, movement, or any of the other anchors, we focus on helping you prioritize yourself and believe in your ability to make changes.

With the right mindset, the six other anchors become easier to adopt and sustain. That’s why I believe mindset is the seventh anchor—and why it’s the key to lasting transformation.

f you’ve been trying to change your health but keep getting stuck—it might not be your willpower.
It might be your mindset.
